Vikings and other invaders

First St Paul's Cathedral completed 604
Built by a monk called Mellitus, who accompanied St Augustine to Britain, the Cathedral was dedicated to St Paul. It was the first of four cathedrals that were to be built on the higher ground that has become the current cathedral site. The new Cathedral was destroyed by fire in 675 AD, rebuilt in stone in 685 and sacked in 961 by Danish invaders. The third cathedral was started in 962, this was burnt along with the City again in 1087.

London and the Danish invasion 878
The Danes, who had quickly overrun other kingdoms in Britain, met resistance when they came up against King Alfred’s forces (King of Wessex from 871 to 899 AD). In 878, after a series of earlier raids, Danish forces again threatened London, however the King’s men repelled them and eventually the country divided between English and Danish rule with London fully under Alfred’s control by 886.
